Description
The Alchemist is a novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, first published in 1988, about a shepherd boy named Santiago who embarks on a journey to the Egyptian pyramids after having a recurring dream about buried treasure. The story is an adaptation of the international folktale type classified as no. 1645 in the Aarne–Thompson–Uther Index of folktales: “The Treasure at Home”, where a man dreams that if he goes to a distant city he will find treasure on a certain bridge. Finding no treasure, he tells his dream to a man who says that he too has dreamed of treasure at certain place. He describes the place, which is the first man’s home.
The novel has been adapted into various forms, including a comic adaptation in 1994, an illustrated version with paintings by the French artist Mœbius in 2002, a theatrical adaptation in London in 2002, and a musical adaptation in Singapore in 2006. In 2023, Legendary Entertainment acquired the film, television, and ancillary rights to the novel, planning to make a film adaptation with TriStar Pictures and Palmstar Media.
The Alchemist has sold over 65 million copies worldwide, spent more than 315 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and holds the Guinness World Record for the most translated book by a living author[. The book’s main theme is about finding one’s destiny, and the advice given to Santiago that “when you really want something to happen, the whole universe will conspire so that your wish comes true” is the core of the novel’s philosophy and a motif that plays throughout the story.
The Alchemist has been praised for its inspiring and eye-opening lessons, including the importance of following one’s Personal Legend, overcoming fear, and persevering through adversity. The book encourages readers to listen to their hearts, recognize opportunities, and follow their dreams, even if it means taking risks and facing challenges along the way
